What is a SAMŪSplint

The SAMŪSplint is a flexible 4.25"x 36" sandwich of soft aluminum and closed cell polyethylene foam that, when folded in specific ways, creates a rigid yet comfortable structure that can be used to support and immobilize injuries and fractures of the extremities and neck. With many uses in addition to its primary use as a splint, it has truly become a mainstay of the emergency medical field. The SAMŪSplint can be rolled up easily to the size of an "ACE" wrap and with proper care and cleaning, can be used over and over again. The SAMŪSplint is used throughout the world in emergency and traditional medical treatment facilities, emergency medical kits, first aid kits, mountaineering and expeditionary emergency supplies, by fire departments paramedics and many others. In fact, anywhere where the possibility of sprain or fracture exists, you will or, at least, should see SAMŪSplint. It has been in use by our military forces for sometime as well as forces of many other nations. It was used extensively in Operation Desert Storm.

History of the SAMŪSplint

The SAMŪSplint was conceived by orthopedic surgeon Sam Scheinberg, while working with MASH units in Vietnam. He observed the need for a reliable yet portable device for injury immobilization and began using various types of foil, folded to increase structural strength. A few years after returning to civilian practice, Scheinberg was again struck by the need for a portable splint/cast. Prototypes were developed and patents obtained and that led to the SAMŪSplint available today. Manufacturing began in 1985.

Who needs a SAMŪSplint

You do! I do! The possibility of sprains, dislocations and broken bones is too great to ignore. Immediate immobilization of the injured area not only reduces pain but can frequently lessen the secondary damage suffered while waiting for and during transport to a medical facility. In ANY sporting or recreational endeavor, the SAMŪSplint should be a part of your gear.
